Isotope effect in Moessbauer spectroscopy

Description

The isotope effect of Moessbauer parameters was studied in FeSO4.7H2O and FeSO4.7D2O and in H216O, D216O and H218O solution of FeSO4.7H2O and FeCl2.4H2O. A significant isotope effect was measured only for the quadrupole splitting in the FeSO4.7H2O solutions: ΔEsub(H2O) - ΔEsub(D2O) = 0.04 mm/s and ΔEsub(H216O) - ΔEsub(H218O) = 0.06 mm s-1. The obtained isotope effects are supposed to be in connection with the shortening of the length between the iron(II) and the oxygen of the water molecule, and in case of H218O, with the change of the electric dipole. It was established that the hydrate-forming ability of H2O is higher than that of D2O. (author)
