Description
This paper describes the activities carried out at Trawsfynydd since the completion of defuelling in 1995. Special factors at Trawsfynydd led to a period of public consultation on how the site should be decommissioned. As a result, an early reduced height safestore strategy has been adopted for the site. This strategy is described in the paper. In addition to the site decommissioning strategy, consideration must be given to intermediate-level radioactive wastes that have been accumulated as the station was operated. The main waste streams at Trawsfynydd are described, together with the plans for dealing with them. Trawsfynydd's location within the Snowdonia National Park has resulted in a planning application being submitted for the long-term appearance and use of the site. The present status of the application is described, together with the implications of the recent Nuclear Reactors (Environmental Impact for Decommissioning) Regulations. Arrangements for the implementation of decommissioning and radwaste work at Trawsfynydd are described, with a summary of work that has been completed. (author)
