Description
The first part of his presentation addressed the reasons for performing research on CFD codes; these were the need to determine the loads (thermal, mechanical, vibrations, etc.) and the need to treat complex problems (from chained to integrated coupled problems). Some topics were driving thinking in this area: boron dilution, thermal fatigue, induced pipe rupture, pressurised thermal shock, long term storage of waste. The codes had to provide realistic answers to all these questions. Commercial software could provide these answers for standard requirements. It was not adequate to fulfil specific requirements, however (e.g., transient flows, or turbulence modelling). Dr Ducros gave a number of examples. Finally, he described the programme underway to improve the TRIO U/PRICELES code
