SMART - An advanced small integral PWR for nuclear desalination and power generation

  • 1. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, P. O. Box 105, Yusung, Teajon 305-600 (Korea, Republic of)

Description

A design concept of a dual-purpose advanced small integral reactor, SMART, for the seawater desalination and electricity generation was developed. A concept of an integrated nuclear desalination plant coupled with the. SMART was also established. The SMART nuclear desalination plant aims to produce 40,000 m3/day of potable water with the MED process and generate about 90 MWe of electricity. The preliminary safety analyses of the SMART show that the key safety parameters of the limiting design base events do not violate the safety limits. It was also found from the preliminary economic evaluation that the SMART desalination plant produces water comparable to or more economical than the similar size fossil fired desalination plant, with respect to water production cost
