Methods used to compensate the delay component of platinum self-powered detectors

  • 1. Hydro-Quebec, Montreal (Canada). Research Inst.

Description

Platinum self-powered detectors possess several desirable characteristics such as prompt response to power change, good sensitivity and low burnup. Platinum detectors, however, have a mixed neutron gamma response which poses problems in relating signal to power. The major drawback to the detector response is the delayed component, which is about 20% of the total signal. Two methods used to compensate for this component are described. One of these is feedforward compensation, in which the detector signal is passed through a filter (analog or digital) which has the inverse transfer function of the platinum detector. The other method is feedback compensation, in which the detector signal is made to agree, in long term, with a more accurate power measurement such as thermal measurements. (author)
