Electronic methods in experimental high-energy physics

  • 1. Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russian Federation)

Description

The current status and future prospects of electronic methods in high- and superhigh-energy physics are discussed. It is shown that these methods become more useful and important as the event selection criteria become more complex, as a greater amount to data is required, and as the requirements on the accuracy of coordinate measurement become more stringent. A broad range of coordinate detectors which are sources of both electrical and optical signals is described. Special attention is paid to information readout, amplification, and registration using multichannel charged-particle detectors. Several specialized microcircuits developed for physics experiments are described. The basic methods of constructing specialized track processors used in both fixed-target experiments and in colliders are discussed. Some of the methods used for precision measurements of data like the impact parameter, decay vertex coordinates, and ionization losses are described. 205 refs., 22 figs., 1 tab
