Description
A prototype of the polarizing undulator with crossed and retarded magnetic fields which was able to produce any kind of elliptically polarized synchrotron radiation from relativistic electrons was designed and constructed. This undulator was installed in a straight section of the electron storage ring, TERAS, and its radiation spectra and polarization characteristics were investigated. The experimental results proved that this device can produce linearly, elliptically, or circularly polarized synchrotron radiation and can switch its polarization quickly which would be very useful in polarization modulation spectroscopy
