Signatures of stellar collapse in electron-type neutrinos

  • 1. State Univ. of New York, Stony Brook (USA). Dept. of Physics

Description

The results are given of an examination of electron neutrino emission following stellar collapse to either a black hole or a supernova. In particular, analytical expressions for the rise-time and magnitude of the leading pulse and the average energy of the emitted neutrinos are given. The subsequent behaviour of the emission is discussed and it is shown that ongoing terrestrial experiments can resolve much of the emission's structure up to distances of approximately 2 kpc. (U.K.)
