Nuclear desalination utilizing waste heat

Description
Thermal desalination plants are energy guzzlers. Energy cost contributes to about 35-45% of the desalted water cost. Nuclear reactors produce significant amount of waste heat, which can be utilized for production of high quality water from seawater by coupling Low Temperature Evaporation (LTE) desalination plant. Three cases of applications of this scheme viz. utilization of waste heat from Nuclear Research Reactor, AHWR and HTGR for desalination are discussed in this paper. (author)
