Description

The main motivation of hypernuclear research is to study the Λ = nucleus interaction. The Λ particle bound to a nucleus represents an excellent probe of nuclear properties since the Λ particle has properties so similar to those of the nucleon as to simulate a nucleon in the nucleus and yet be recognizably distinct. With such a probe the physical content of the quasiparticle picture can be investigated experimentally. The properties and decay modes of the Λ particle are considered. Results of experiments involving Λ - nucleus interactions are examined. (U.K.)
