Monte Carlo Simulation of gamma radiation contributions to atomic displacements in a lattice through photo-electric absorption
- 1. Instituto Superior de Tecnologias y Ciencias Aplicadas, InSTEC, La Habana (Cuba)
Description
Gamma radiation contributions to atomic displacements (AD) in a lattice through photoelectric absorption (PE) are estimated. Recoil energy transferred to an atom due to the absorption of a photon and the threshold energy for gamma radiation to cause AD, are determined at first. AD induced by gamma PE is calculated using a Monte Carlo (MC) particle transport simulation algorithm. AD rates for the superconductor material YBCO caused by PE and elastic scattering of the secondary electrons (ES) are compared for different energies of the radiation source. AD of oxygen atoms bounded in the chains (Cu - O) and the planes (Cu - O2) are also compared with AD in barium (Ba) atoms for lattice. (Author)
