  • 1. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC (United States). Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

Description

The USNRC research program on light-water-reactor severe accidents is with extensive international contributions, preeminent in this area. The program focuses on accidents that could exceed plant design bases and protection against severe accident risks, particularly with respect to containing integrity. This paper describes the issues and the nature, status, and results of the research. It is shown that number of the issues such as the Three Mile Island Vessel Investigation Project and Mark I containment linear failure and direct containment heating, have been resolved or are near resolution. 11 refs
