Description
The environmental impact of aquatic and atmospheric radioactive discharges can be assessed by carrying out appropriate monitoring and relating data to specified limits. The development of a nuclear power station at Torness provided an opportunity to design and implement such a programme. This paper discusses the need for pre- and post-operational environmental monitoring by operators and for independent checks by the Authorising Department. Radionuclides giving rise to the most significantly potential doses are considered in conjunction with environmental factors which were incorporated into the design of the monitoring programme for routine operations and possible accidental releases.
