On a possible test of various pulsar models
Description
It is shown that the existing observational data do not rule out a suppression of multiparticle production of electron-positron pairs near the surface of the neutron star in pulsars with B2 5 x 1012 G if the spindown of the neutron star is due to magnetic-dipole radiation losses and do not agree with this conclusion if the neutron star is slowed down by current losses. The appreciable correlation between the luminosity of the short-period pulsars and the strength of the magnetic field at the light cylinder agrees with the hypothesis that the radio emission of these pulsars is generated near the light cylinder. The absence of such correlation for pulsars with P > 1 sec apparently rules out the possibility of applying relativistic models to long-period pulsars
