On the interaction of the solar acoustic oscillations with convection. I. Scattering of sound by steady vorticity
Description
A general analytic solution is presented that describes the scattering of sound of wavelength lambda and frequency omega, from a steady laminar compact vortex of radius a and a uniform vorticity of 2 Omegas. There are no restrictions on the magnitude of the values of a or Omega relative to those of lambda and omega. The generality of this solution provides a complete picture of the steady state acoustic scattering properties of an isolated cylindrical vortex column. Some inferences are made for the scattering of p-modes by eddies in the solar convection zone. 45 refs
