Description
The He I 23P-31D intercombination line has been observed by using laser absorption spectroscopy over a 140 m optical path in a laboratory plasma. Whilst electric-field-induced forbidden transitions are well known in laboratory plasmas, this is the first observation of a collision-induced intercombination line. Discussion is given of the likely underlying mechanisms. (author)
