Measurement of the direct photon spectrum from decays of the Υ(1S) resonance
Description
Using the Crystal Ball detector at the e+e--storage ring DORIS II we have measured the direct photon spectrum from the Υ(1S). These photons result from the decays Υ → γgg → γ + hadrons. From the number of direct photons and Υ(1S) → ggg → hadrons decays we determined the ratio Bγ = Γ(Υ → γgg)/Γ(Υ → ggg) = (2.7 ± ±0.4)%. This ratio Bγ is used to deduce the strong coupling constant in the MS scheme at Q2 = (1.5 GeV)2 to be αs = 0.25 ± 0.02 ± 0.04. Various theoretical predictions of the form of the direct photon spectrum were fitted to our data. While the prediction of the shape of the spectrum by lowest order QCD can be ruled out, the model by R. D. Field fits our data well. Since the non-abelian character of the QCD plays an essential role in the Field-model, this good agreement is an indication for the selfinteraction of gluons. (orig.)

Mit dem Crystal Ball-Detektor wurde am e+e--Speicherring DORIS II das Spektrum der direkten Photonen von der Υ(1S)-Resonanz gemessen. Diese Photonen stammen aus den Zerfaellen der Υ(1S)-Resonanz in ein direktes Photon und zwei Gluonen γ → γgg → γ + Hadronen. Aus der Anzahl der direkten Photonen und der Anzahl der Zerfaelle Υ → ggg → Hadronen wurde das Verhaeltnis Bγ = Γ/Υ → Υgg)/Γ(γ → ggg) = (2.7 ± 0.02 ± 0.4)% bestimmt. Mit Hilfe dieses Verhaeltnisses Bγ wurde die starke Kopplungskonstante αs im MS-Schema bei Q2 = (1.5 GeV)2 zu αs = 0.25 ± 0.02 ± 0.04 bestimmt. Verschiedene theoretische Vorhersagen der Form des Photonenspektrums wurden an unsere Messdaten angepasst. Waehrend die QCD-Vorhersage in Stoerungsrechnung in niedrigster Ordnung in αs ausgeschlossen werden kann, beschreibt das Modell von R. D. Field unsere Daten gut. Da die Form des Spektrums der hochenergetischen Photonen im Field-Modell wesentlich von dem nichtabelschen Charakter der QCD mitbestimmt wird, ist diese gute Uebereinstimmung ein Hinweis auf die Selbstwechselwirkung der Gluonen.
