Production of Terbium-149 and Terbium-152 by heavy ion reactions

Full text: The Terbium isotopes have some valuable nuclear decay properties that make them of potential interest in nuclear medicine, Terbium-149 is the only significant alpha emitter in the lanthanides, while Terbium-152 is of potential value as a radiolanthanide tracer in positron emission tomography. We report the production of Tb-149, 152 by heavy ion reactions at the ANU Tandem accelerator. After purification, Tb-149 has been used to investigate cancer cell cytotoxicity. However, the practical availability of these radioisotopes will be restricted to research centres with high energy proton spallation sources
