Volumetric creep in nickel: the influence of stress on swelling

Description

The influence of stress on a metal was studied in the temperature range in which radiation-induced swelling occurs. Two aspects of the problem were investigated: the influence of stress on void formation and growth; the relationship between irradiation creep and swelling. The experiment was performed on Ni; the reactor cycle was 500 hours and the experiment ran for nine cycles; after each cycle the specimens were measured. The results obtained show that: volumetric creep is not a monotonic function of stress and the greatest effect occurs at an optimum intermediate stress; positive volumetric creep is probably a transient effect related to the nucleation stage; a direct coupling exists between volumetric creep and irradiation creep

Abstract (French)

On a etudie l'influence d'une contrainte sur un metal dans le domaine de temperature ou se produit le gonflement sous irradiation. Deux aspects du probleme sont consideres: l'influence de la contrainte sur la formation et la croissance de cavites; la relation entre le fluage d'irradiation et le gonflement. L'experience a ete effectuee sur du Ni; le cycle d'irradiation etait de 500 heures et l'experience durait 9 cycles; apres chaque cycle les echantillons etaient mesures. Les resultats obtenus montrent que: le fluage volumetrique n'est pas une fonction monotone de la contrainte et l'effet le plus important a lieu pour une contrainte intermediaire optimum; le fluage volumetrique positif est sans doute un effet transitoire lie a une etape de la nucleation; un couplage direct existe entre fluage volumetrique et d'irradiation
