The morphology of precipitates in the zirconium alloys Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4 in different heat treatment conditions
Description
Zirconium alloys are commonly used for the construction of reactor fuel elements. For the alloys Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4 the microstructural appearance of precipitates depending on the chemical composition of the alloy is shown. The polymorphic behaviour of the zirconium matrix causes different states of precipitation as a function of the heat treatment. Typical microstructures are shown by light and electron microscopy. Problems of sample preparation for light and electron microscopy are discussed and a mechanism of artefacting is described which may cause errors in the interpretation of the nature of the precipitates. Abstract (German)
In den fuer Reaktorbrennelemente verwendeten Zirkoniumlegierungen Zircaloy-2 und Zircaloy-4 werden die im Gefuege auftretenden Ausscheidungen in Abhaengigkeit von der Legierungszusammensetzung vorgefuehrt. Die aufgrund der Polymorphie der Zirkoniummatrix von der Waermebehandlung abhaengigen, verschiedenartigen Ausscheidungszustaende werden anhand von metallografischen und durchstrahl-elektronenmikroskopischen Beispielen diskutiert. Dabei wird auf Probleme der Praeparation fuer die Lichtmikroskopie und die Elektronenmikroskopie eingegangen und ein Mechanismus der Artefaktbildung beschrieben, der zu Fehlinterpretationen in Bezug auf den Ausscheidungszustand fuehren kann.
