Description

TlCuCl3 is a spin-12 magnetic insulator with a spin gap Δ/2μB=5.5T. Its magnetic properties are described by a three-dimensionally coupled spin dimer model. Tl(Cu1-xMgx)Cl3 doped with nonmagnetic Mg2+ undergoes impurity-induced magnetic ordering. Because a finite gap for triplet excitations still remains, this doped system can also undergo magnetic-field-induced magnetic ordering. In order to investigate the phase diagram of TlCu1-xMgxCl3 with x∼0.01, we performed specific heat measurements and neutron scattering experiments in a magnetic field. It was found that impurity- and field-induced ordered phases are the same, and that the gapped spin liquid state observed in pure TlCuCl3 is completely wiped out by such a weak doping
