Higher isospin states in 36Ar through alpha particle capture resonances

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Nuclear Physics Div.

Description

With a view to locating and studying the higher inospin states in the self-conjugate nucleus 36Ar, the excitation function in the reaction 32S(α,γ)36Ar has been obtained in the bombarding energy range, esub(α)=4.5 to 4.8 MeV. An isotopically enriched 32S target of 10 KeV thickness and a large volume NaI(Tl) scintillation detector for gamma rays were used. Two isolated resonances at Esub(α)=4.53 +- 0.01 and 4.69 +- 0.01 Mev have been located, corresponding to the excitation energy in 36Ar of Esub(ex)=10.67 and 10.82 MeV respectively. The decay of these resonances have been determined as also the absolute strength, to be 0.86 +- 0.13 eV and 2.2 +- 0.2 eV respectively. Angular distribution at the Esub(α)=4.69 MeV resonance has also been measured. Based on these measurements, possible spin and isospin assignments of these resonances are discussed. (author)
