Diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography in the classification of intrapelvic tumours according to stage
Description
256 CT scans visualising tumours of the prostate, urinary bladder, ovaries and cervix were analysed and contrasted with the findings revealed by conventional methods of examination as well as the final diagnosis established. It was found for all organs investigated here that the CT scans failed to disclose any small-size tumours. On the other hand, CT proved reliable in the detection of tumours at an advanced stage. It was judged unsuitable to determine the extension of primary local changes in tumours of the urinary bladder and, even more so, tumours of the prostate. In the evaluation of lymph node affection CT, even though showing limited sensitivity, provided information in addition to that from conventional X-ray procedures, which should precede bipedal lymphography. This statement must, however, remain restricted to positive findings, any negative findings require further clarification by lymphography. Additional advantages of CT are lying in the precise adjustment of radiation therapy and non-invasive follow-up checks. (orig./MBC)

(orig./MBC)Additional details
