Euratom framework programs on research and training in nuclear energy in the European union

Promotion of collaborative research and training in nuclear energy in Member States of the European Union (EU) has been at the heart of the EURATOM treaty (established in 1957) and since then, it has acted as a driving force for the development of nuclear power in the EU. For improving its competitiveness and the long-term sustainable economic growth, the EU must secure its energy supply, reduce its dependency on imported energy, diversify its energy sources and develop new technologies. Scientific research is the key to producing knowledge for competitiveness of the industry. European Community research has been organised in Framework Programs (FP) of durations of 4-5 years since 1984. In order to create a better overall framework conditions for research in Europe, a European Research Area (ERA) was launched in the year 2000. The current Sixth EURATOM FP (2002-2006), with a budget of 1323 Million Euro including nuclear fusion, is geared to make ERA a reality by integrating, restructuring and networking research in the EU in certain well focussed areas such as (1) Radioactive waste management, (2) Innovative concepts for safer processes in nuclear energy, (3) Improving the safety of nuclear installations and (4) Better integrating European education and training in nuclear safety and generating the necessary competence. Preparations for the Seventh EURATOM FP (2007-11) are now well underway. International cooperation is an important element in the Euratom Framework Programs. (author)
