Intrinsic isotope effects in bicyclic amines

Description

The role of negative hyperconjugation and other factors in the interaction of C-H bonds with an adjacent amine nitrogen is examined for measurements of isotope shifts at N-15 in several tertiary bicyclic amines. The intrinsic isotope shifts are evaluated in light of molecular mechanics and molecular orbital calculations, C-D coupling constants, IR stretching frequencies, and isotope effects on protonation equilibria. The substitution of deuterium for protium results in upfield shifts of the N-15 NMR signal which are structurally dependent
