Secondary electron emission from carbon foils resulting from fast ion bombardment
- 1. Atomic Energy Corp. of South Africa (Pty) Ltd., Pretoria
Description
The foward, backward and total secondary electron yields from thin carbon foils traversed by heavy ions (H, He, B, C, O and F) have been measured as a function of beam energy (0.4-3.7 MeV). These values have been shown to be dependent on the beam density, the incoming charge state and the extent of hydrogen contamination of the foil surfaces. The yields measured have been related to the stopping powers for the respective projectiles and an enhancement in the value of γ/(dE/dx) has been observed for ion velocities of < or approx. 6 x 108 cm/s.
