Experiments for hydrogen production by the metal/metal hydride process
Description
The sodium/sodium hydride process is a technique for hydrogen production from water. Most of the required energy is fed in as high-temperature heat, so that overall efficiencies of more than 50% are achievable. The dissertation in hand describes a laboratory-scale system consisting of the three main components sodium cycle, dual membrane (palladium-coated vanadium foil after up-stream palladium/silver foil), and electrolytic cell (working temperature between 275 and 300deg C). The electrolytic voltage of this system is 1.2 V, and the electrical curent density 109 A/m2. This current density is by one or two orders of magnitude lower than that of modern electrolytic systems. The achievable hydrogen production rate is 1.6 x 10-7 mol/s on an average. (MM)
