11 years of experience with heat extraction at the Beznau I and II nuclear power plant for district heating
Description
The district heating system installed since 1984 at the Beznau Nuclear Power Plant, consists of a 30 km main pipeline and 90 km of local distribution pipes in 11 communities. The regional district heat supply system has become an integrated part of the regional infrastructure for around 18000 inhabitants of the lower Aare valley. A total of 80 MWth heat load is expected to be installed within the next years (1994: 65 MWth). Using all the 5 existing Swiss nuclear power plants sited in thickly settled areas for district heating could avoid the burning of about 2 millions of oil and the emission of 6 millions tons of CO2. 3 refs., 3 figs
