Formation of linear high-beta heliacs in a 3-meter theta pinch

Description

The formation and equilibrium of linear heliac in a 3-m, low-comoression, 90 KV, 15 KJ theta pinch are investigated. The axis of the segmented circular compression coil has a helical offset of 2 cm an axial helical period of 40 cm. Added to this l=1 stellator configuration is a straight axial current-carrying ''hardcore'' conductor to produce doubly connected flux surfaces: circular about the hardcore, and bean-shaped about the helical axis. Internal magnetic probes are used to determine the heliac flux-surface and plasma-pressure distributions. Different pressure distributions over the inner hard-core and outer bean shaped flux surfaces, are shown. Maximum beta values are typically 0.7. Unlike the case of the l=1 stellarator there is little indication of MHD mode activity of these heliac quasiequilibria. (author)

Investigam-se a formacao e equilibrio de um heliaco linear em um teta pinch de 15 KJ, 90 KV, baixa compressao de 3-m. O eixo da bobina de compressao circular segmentada possui uma impressao heliacal de 2 cm com um periodo heliacal de 2 cm com um periodo heliacal axial de 40 cm. Incluiu-se a configuracao estreladora l=1 um condutor de nucleo duro portador de corrente axial paralelo para produzir superficies de fluxo conectadas duplamente: circular em torno do nucleo duro, e em forma de feijao em torno do eixo helicoidal. Sondas magneticas interna sao usadas para determinar as distribuicoes de superficies de fluxo helicoidal e pressao do plasma. Mostram-se diferentes distribuicoes de pressao sobre as superficies do nucleo duro e do fluxo em forma de feijao. Valores de beta maximo sao tipicamente de 0,7. Ao contrario do estrelador l=1 existe uma pequena indicacao da atividade do modo MHD destes quase equilibrios helicoidais. (M.C.K.)
