Description
Failure occurred in railroad track causing derailment. Investigations were made to ascertain the cause of failure. The presence of long fatigue cracks was noted during the examination of the fractured surfaces. These cracks originated in the subsurface region and were 20 to 30 mm long at the time of the failure. The tensile tests revealed that the material had poor ductility. The metallographic examination showed the presence of pits and microcracks originating near the inclusions in the subsurface region. It was concluded that the Rolling Contact Fatigue played a significant role in the failure. (author)
