Synthesis and structure of Sr-doped rare earth cobaltates

Full text: Materials based on the basic perovskite structure, CaTiO3δ show a vast range of physical properties, including high temperature superconductivity and colossal magneto-resistance. Here a structural study of the M1-xSrxCoO3-δ family of oxides, where M is Y3+ or a lanthanide ion and x = 2/3 is presented. The samples were synthesized using sol-gel methods and sintered in air. The solid solution range is outlined, both in terms of x and M. The existence of supercell reflections is demonstrated, and electron diffraction and synchrotron and laboratory X-ray diffraction shows the structure to be pseudo-tetragonal, with space group Cmmm and lattice parameters approximately 2√2a, 2√2a, 4a where a is the basic perovskite lattice vector
