Measurements of some radiobiological and physical properties of neutrons produced by a 4-MV Van de Graaff accelerator
- 1. Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood, England
Description
Measurements were made of the energy spectrum and radiobiological properties of neutrons generated by 4-MeV deuterons on a thick beryllium target. The mean neutron energy determined, using emulsion techniques, was 3.0 MeV. The survival curves for two cell lines irradiated with neutrons had a small shoulder. V79 cells were capable of recovering from the sublethal damage this shoulder represented. The oxygen enhancement ratio was reduced from 3.2 and 2.7 for the two cell lines irradiated with X rays to 1.6 and 1.5, respectively, following neutron irradiation. The RBEs for tumor cells irradiated in vivo or in vitro and assayed in vitro were in good agreement with each other. However, the RBE for tumor growth delay was higher than that for tumor cell survival
