Preparation and characterization of sodium and transition metal double oxides

  • 1. Westinghouse Advanced Reactors Division, Madison, PA

Description

Various transition metal and sodium compounds of the NaMO2 and Na2MO2 type double oxides were prepared and characterized. Except NaCrO2 all other compounds were found to be hygroscopic. The density and the melting point of NaCrO2 and Na2NiO2 were measured while the stoichiometry of Na2NiO2 was also confirmed by chemical analysis. It was observed that extensive solid solution or an intermediate phase is formed between the nickel compounds as well as the iron compounds In the case of chromium, no compound other than NaCrO2 was found in a reducing atmosphere at temperatures up to 8500C. X-ray diffraction data for some of these compounds are presented
