Digital transformation of utilities. Succeeding in the challenge of data integration at the service of networks and of their clients. Study

As more than 120 smart grid demonstrators have been implemented in France since 2008, this publication presents the digital transformation of electric power systems as an answer to the major stake of global warming, and proposes guidelines to support operators in their digitalisation projects, and more particularly a description of ways data is operationally used and optimised from the point of view of grid managers, transport grid managers, solution providers and institutions. Some examples chosen in European countries are briefly indicated, and a typical data chain value is proposed: production, collection, aggregation, cleaning, analysis, and visualisation and exchange. The publication then comments data from a survey among European actors involved in projects focussed on data and its exploitation (types of actions, priorities of operators in terms of data project. Flexibility and asset management are more particularly commented as applications. The next part discusses how operators use this digital level in their business evolutions (examples of ENEDIS, EDS and RTE are briefly evoked). Remaining obstacles to an industrial use of data are identified and discussed.
