SMR initiatives within the CSA Nuclear Standards Program

  • 1. CSA Group, Toronto, ON (Canada)

Description

Canadian Standards Association, operating as CSA Group ("CSA"), is a not-for-profit, membership-based organization dedicated to safety, social good, and sustainability with a mission to enhance the lives of Canadians through the advancement of Standards. The CSA Nuclear Program facilitates the development of standards to support a safe, reliable nuclear sector in Canada and strives to be a positive influence within the international nuclear power community. This paper provides an overview of CSA Group and the CSA standards development process. It introduces the CSA Nuclear Program and specifically describes various types of CSA suggested solutions, including standards research, workshops, and other standards-based deliverables, and examples of how these solutions have been leveraged to address evolving nuclear sector needs for new technologies including SMRs. Ongoing projects to review sector needs and impacts related to standards for the SMR supply chain, management of radioactive waste, and advanced manufacturing will also be highlighted. Discussions on CSA's involvement in the North American Advanced Reactor Codes and Standards Collaborative will also be addressed. The paper concludes with a summary of opportunities for relevant and interested parties within the sector to participate in SMR-related standardization initiatives.
