Description
The safest way of storage and immobilization of radioactive waste is to embed them in vitreous or ceramic materials. Glass is offering high capacity of storage and safe immobilization of radioactive waste, and has great ability to adapt its content and properties following the nature, quantity and activity level of radioactive waste. Borosilicate glasses were prepared by melting at 1300 deg. C 1450 deg. C, in platinum crucible, working in atmospheric conditions. All glasses could easily dissolve until 30% (wt) of UO3. The glasses were characterized by density, chemical stability in different aqueous media and DTA. FTIR spectroscopy was used in order to determine some of the structural properties. The bulk homogeneity of the obtained glasses was investigated by SEM microscopy. (authors)
