Behavior of preirradiated LWR fuel rods under reactivity initiated accident conditions

Description

Power excursion of a reactor due to rapid insertion of excess reactivity into the core, called as a reactivity initiated accident (RIA) is recognized as an accident which causes fuel overheating and failure and, in a very severe accidental case, causes mechanical energy genreaiton to affect reactor core integrity. Studies on the fuel behavior under the RIA conditions are of great importance for the safety design of power reactors against this kind of severe accidents
