3-D simulation code for FEL amplifiers
Description
Non-Liouvillean cooling of a heavy ion beam for inertial confinement fusion can require the VUV radiation as provided by an FEL. To this aim, a fully 3-D simulation code for FEL amplifiers has been developed. Longitudinal electron motion is simulated according to the same equations used in 1-D codes. This code takes also into account the dynamics of an e-beam with finite emittance in realistic 3-D wiggler field. Laser field equations, including higher harmonics, are solved by a finite-element method. Some results for the design of an FEL amplifier in the VUV region are reported
