On the impact characterisation of a thermally induced martensitic copper based shape memory alloy

Description

The impact behavior of copper based shape memory alloy under static and dynamic loading has studied. Microscopic observations reveal typical intergranular fracture in the static condition and the occurrence of localised shear and deformation bands, planar defects twinning and microcracking of martensitic plates under dynamic test condition. The morphology of the defect structure produced during impact loading conditions appears to have relevance to the damping and shape memory characteristics of the alloy. (author)
