Description

Quantitative risk calculations can be carried out for complex technological systems and have been proposed for use in setting safety goals. Current work in the nuclear power field suggests that difficulties lie in the uncertainties inherent in calculating the risk, in rationalizing these calculations with public perception of risk, and in identifying benefits. The approach is however useful in this and in other areas because of the information it can provide concerning comparative risk, and concerning reliability and availability of systems. 12 references
