Cation exchange chromatographic separation of cadmium in mixed solvent systems

  • 1. Indian Inst. of Tech., Bombay. Dept. of Chemistry

Description

Cation exchange chromatographic behaviour of cadmium was studied in mixed solvent system Hydrochloric acid and its mixtures with organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, iso-propanol, acetone, dioxane and tetrahydrofuran in various proportion were used as eluants, and their efficiency was evaluated. Cadmium was separated from manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, lead and alkaline earth elements in methanol media. It was separated from iron, aluminium, gallium, indium and bismuth in ethanol media. The separation of titanium, zirconium, hafnium and thorium from cadmium was accomplished in iso-propanol media. Finally, it was separated from alkali elements, uranium and tellurium in acetone media. Many interesting multicomponent separations, especially that of the separation of zinc, cadmium and mercury, were possible. The method was extended to the determination of cadmium in Wood's metal.
