Description
High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Japan (KEK) is constructing facilities for a neutrino oscillation experiment, of which the main facilities comprise a target station for pion production and its decay volume, utilizing the current 12 GeV-proton synchrotron. Since these facilities are constructed underground through several strata, soil and ground water activation must be considered for the shielding design with maximum achievable reduction of the induced activity. Using hadron fluence calculated with the MARS Monte-Carlo code, radio-activities induced in the soil shieldings were found to determine the thickness of concrete and iron shields. (author)
