An extraction applied magnetic field ion diode for ion source studies

Description

An applied magnetic field ion diode has been developed for the NEREUS accelerator to study possible ion sources for use on the PBFA I and II accelerators. These studies concentrate on a number of issues: (1) the mechanism for breakdown of flashover type sources; (2) material studies of flashover type ion sources; (3) the effects of vacuum and surface preparation on the ion source; and (4) the effect of the rise time of the voltage on the ion source turn-on and purity. The purpose of these experiments is to maximize the purity and minimize the turn-on delay for a given ion species
