Sr-free Bi-Ln-Ca-Cu-O superconductors

Description

Single-phase samples of Sr-free Bi2Ln0.5Ca2.5Cu2Oy (Ln=rare earth elements) superconductors were successfully prepared. Tc's of Bi2Ln0.5Ca2.5Cu2Oy were found to depend on both the species of Ln and the oxygen content, y. X-ray diffraction and TEM observations revealed that all the compounds were of the 2212 phase exhibiting structural modulation. The modulation period was found fixed being independent of both the species of Ln and the oxygen content. For the value of y fixed at 8.33, Tc varied from 0 to ∼ 40K when different species of the rare earth elements were used. In general, the larger the ionic radius of Ln3+ was, the higher was Tc
