Alpha spectroscopy applied to the search of trace amounts and to the identification of nuclei produced by nuclear reactions
Description
In order to increase the sensitivity of an α-particle spectrometer, its background has been lowered. This has been achieved by using radioactivity-free materials and by reducing the effects of cosmic rays. This set up allowed to confirm the presence of unidentified α-emitting elements in minerals originating from the South-East of Madagascar. Using chemical separations, the half-life of one α-particle group, having an energy of 8.89 MeV, has been measured as 15.0±2.5 h. Alpha-ray spectroscopy has also been applied in a fusion-evaporation reaction, to determine the optimal energy for forming the nucleus 219Ac. Then, a γ ray experiment identified the γ-ray transitions in 219Ac and established their relative ordering in the decay scheme

Afin d'abaisser la limite de sensibilite d'un ensemble de detection alpha, le bruit de fond a ete minimise par l'utilisation de materiaux exempts d'elements radioactifs et par la diminution des effets dus aux rayonnements cosmiques. Cet ensemble a permis de confirmer la presence d'elements trace non identifies et emetteurs α dans des mineraux en provenance du Sud-Est de Madagascar. A l'aide de separations chimiques, la periode d'un des groupes α observes, d'energie 8.89 MeV, a pu etre mesuree (15.0±2.5 h). La spectroscopie alpha a egalement ete utilisee pour determiner l'energie incidente la plus favorable pour former le noyau 219Ac par une reaction de fusion-evaporation. Une etude annexe, par spectroscopie gamma, a permis d'identifier les transitions γ dans le noyau 219Ac, ainsi que leur ordre relatif dans le schema de decroissanceFiles
