IRIS: A comprehensive approach to nuclear power in smaller size and developing countries

Description

Smaller size reactors are actively being proposed for smaller size and developing countries considering nuclear energy for the first time. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced in February 2008 its intention to contribute to funding the licensing of a 'Grid Appropriate Reactor' of 500 MWe or less for eventual deployment in such countries and has selected the light water reactor technology. This paper presents the characteristics of IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure), a 335 MWe light water reactor, being developed by an international team led by Westinghouse Electric Co. In addition to the reactor design, the IRIS overall approach to address the needs of smaller size and developing countries is discussed, focusing on such aspects as: economic attractiveness; enhanced safety and public acceptance; its vast array of cogeneration applications; and, unique ability to help develop and utilize the country's human resources infrastructure.
