Ion resonance acceleration by waves of electron-beam space charge
Description
A possibility of resonance acceleration by a space charge wave of a magnetized electron beam at synchronous motion of ions and a wave is considered. The required change in the phase velocity of the wave has been realised at the expense of profiling the external magnetic field magnitude. Growth of the wave amplitude of a space charge took place simultaneously with ion acceleration due to the development of two-stream instability. Ion entrainment by the wave field and further dynamics of ion bunches are investigated on the base of numerical simulation of ion motion. In this case the electron motion has been considered linear. The effect of electron motion non-linearity causing the development of a satellite instability of accelerating wave is numerically investigated. Possible parameters of beams at which the considered acceleration mechanism is realized are presented. The conducted investigations permit to conclude that instability of mutually penetrating electron and ion streams followed by the development of electron beam plasma oscillations may be used for excitation of a wave accelerating ions. High efficiency of energy flux transport from the electron beam to accelerated ions may be obtained only at the stage of non-linear electron oscillations
