Adiabatic Transfer between Hyperfine Levels in Combined Electric and Magnetic Fields

Description
We report observation of transfer between hyperfine levels due to the action of combined external electric and magnetic fields, changing the energy and the angular momentum of the atom. The experiments were performed on a beam of Ga atoms in the fine structure level 4s24p2P3/2, traversing specially confined and spatially displaced perpendicularly crossed electric and magnetic fields. The hyperfine level transfer was detected by probing the population of the levels involved. copyright 1996 The American Physical Society
