Effective action for a cosmic string

Description
By considering a cosmic string as a vortex solution to a field theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking, we derive the effective action for the string motion in terms of a two-dimensional integral over the world-sheet representing the history of the centre of the string. The action is found to be a Polyakov action with a rigidity term. The implications for cusp formation are discussed. (orig.)
