The universe in FAIR

Description

The FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) consortium includes funding organizations from Germany, India, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Finland, France and Sweden with associate members UK and the Czech Republic. More than 3000 researchers from around the world are working on the research program and form the four research pillars on which the project is based - NuStAR (Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics and Reactions), CBM (Compressed Baryonic Matter), PANDA (antiProton ANnihilation in DArmstadt), APPA ( Atomic Physics, Plasma physics and Applied sciences in the bio, medical, and material sciences). To a large extent, FAIR will inherit the structure of GSI, but will offer greater possibilities for core selection and will supply beams with higher intensity, thus allowing study of less probable processes. In FAIR, the pre-accelerated beams from SIS18 will be injected into a synchrotron accelerator with a diameter of 1.1 km and a magnetic hardness of 100 T.m. Accelerated nuclei will be used by NuStAR, CBM, PANDA and APPA. Bulgaria has an informal participation in FAIR through one of the above mentioned collaborations - NuStAR, which comprises over 700 researchers from around the world and aims to study the nuclear structure of short-lived exotic nuclei located far from the line of beta stability.
